Marlins Waste Another Lead in D.C., Lose 6-4 to Nationals

The Marlins were beating the Nationals for a second straight game before they ended up with another loss

The Miami Marlins blew another lead in their 6-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday.

Much like Opening Day, Miami had a two-run lead at one point in this one. In Monday's loss, the bullpen let the game get away. This time around, it was starter Dan Straily who ran into some trouble.

Straily was making his Miami debut and it could not have went much worse. The veteran allowed five runs on six hits in his 3.1 innings of work. Straily who came to Miami in a off-season trade walked two and struck out none. The Nationals plated four of the runs in the fourth inning and ended Straily's day early.

Miami's defense did not do the pitching staff any favors during the loss either. Even though the team was charged with no errors, there were multiple miscues along the way. Balls dropped between fielders and also found openings when Miami attempted defensive shifts.

The Marlins did not receive much in the way of offense, despite a decent start to the game. After scoring two runs in the first inning, Miami was held to only two runs for the remainder of the game. The first run came courtesy of J.T. Realmuto with a home run in the eighth frame. Realmuto would add another run batted in with a single in the ninth.

In the seventh inning, Derek Dietrich was hit with a pitch for the second time in the game. After Dietrich barked at the pitcher, both benches were warned. That warning prompted an argument and an ejection for Miami manager Don Mattingly. Bench coach Tim Wallach took over as skipper for the remainder of the contest.

The Marlins will try to salvage a win in the series finale on Thursday at 4:05 p.m.
