Panthers Exact Revenge on Penguins in Shootout

The Panthers completed a home-and-home series against the Penguins on Monday

Two days after the Pittsburgh Penguins won a violent game, the Florida Panthers got their revenge with a 4-3 win on Monday.

This was the third straight time that Florida won when a game went to a shootout. It was also its fourth such win in its last six tries. Overall on the season, the Panthers now are sitting at 15-9-8 which is good for 38 points.

Florida trailed 1-0 until the final seconds of the second period. That's when Jussi Jokinen put his third goal of the season into the net. Dave Bolland and Dmitry Kulikov assisted on the game-tying score.

When the third period got underway, Jimmy Hayes took things over. Only 22 seconds into the final period of regulation, Hayes scored his eighth goal of the season. The goal which Sean Bergenheim assisted on put the Panthers up by one at the time.

Hayes wasn't done yet as he added another goal at the 4:57 mark of the period to give him nine on the year. Bergenheim assisted on that goal as well along with Aleksander Barkov. The Panthers held a two-goal advantage at this point but the Penguins would go on to tie the game. Pittsburgh scored both of its goals in the final five minutes of regulation.

In the shootout, Barkov scored the game-winner in the seventh and final round. Florida missed three of its six attempts prior to the goal. Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury completed saves on the other three tries.

Roberto Luongo stopped 24 of the 27 tries sent his way during the game. In the shootout, the goalie also stopped all seven tries fired at him.

The Panthers will have nearly a week off now before their next game. On Sunday, Florida will welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to BB&T Center.
