Panthers Hold On For Close Win in Detroit

The Panthers beat Detroit 4-3 on Tuesday in Roberto Luongo's return to the team

The Florida Panthers put an end to a Detroit Red Wings winning streak on Tuesday with their 4-3 victory at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit entered the contest with a four-game win streak and one of the best records overall in the NHL. Florida on the other hand was playing their second game in as many nights after a loss on Monday in Columbus.

Roberto Luongo returned to action after missing two games with an arm injury. 41 shots were sent Luongo's way and he stopped 38 of them. Two of Detroit's goals went into the net during the third period. Florida had held a three-goal advantage heading into the final period.

Jimmy Hayes scored the first goal of the day for Florida and it came in the first period. It was the sixth goal of the season for Hayes and it was assisted on by Vincent Trocheck and Dmitry Kulikov.

In the second period, Sean Bergenheim scored his fourth goal of the year to put the Panthers up 2-1. That goal had assists from Jussi Jokinen and Brad Boyes on it.

Not content with just an assist, Trocheck would score his own goal 27 seconds into the third period. Hayes returned the favor for his goal by assisting Trocheck on this one. Rookie Aaron Ekblad would put the fourth and eventual game-winning goal into the net next. Trocheck assisted on that one as well along with Jonathan Huberdeau.

Aleksander Barkov missed the game with an upper body injury while Colby Robak was a healthy scratch.

The Panthers will take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday back home in Sunrise as they look to get revenge for Monday's loss.
