Stanton Goes Deep Twice in Win

Giancarlo Stanton hit a pair of home runs on Monday to help the Marlins win 6-5

The Miami Marlins picked up a 6-5 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday in a game that featured two home runs by Giancarlo Stanton.

Stanton now has 31 home runs on the year and this was the 13th time in his career that the slugger went deep at least twice in a game. The only active player who had more mult-homer games before turning 25 was Alex Rodriguez. The star had 14 such games according to ESPN.

Stanton now not only leads the National League in home runs but is tied for the lead in Major League Baseball as a whole. Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox also has 31 blasts thus far this year.

Christian Yelich had a fine day himself with three hits including his 18th double of the season. The left-fielder also scored twice and knocked in another run.

Tom Koehler wasn't at his best on Monday but he battled his way to a win. The Cardinals had eight hits against Koehler in his five innings. The right-hander allowed three runs and was lifted with two runners on in the sixth and no outs on the board.

Chris Hatcher would come out of the bullpen and work out of the jam to keep the lead intact for Miami. Mike Dunn and Bryan Morris would work the next two innings in scoreless fashion to keep the score right where it was.

Steve Cishek worked the ninth inning for his 30th save in 2014. The closer allowed two hits and a pair of runs in the inning. A three-run lead for Miami was trimmed to only one before the game ended.

Defense was big in this game for Miami as well. Stanton made a diving catch in right-field that drew a loud long standing ovation from the crowd. Adeiny Hechavarria turned a nifty double play of his own later in the same inning.

The Marlins will battle the defending NL champions again on Tuesday when they send Jarred Cosart to the mound.
