Stanton Picks Up Silver Slugger Award

Giancarlo Stanton added another award to his resume on Thursday with a Silver Slugger award

Giancarlo Stanton has had a busy award season and he added one more on Thursday with the Silver Slugger award.

The award recognizes the best offensive player at each position and is voted on by coaches and managers around Major League Baseball. One caveat of the voting process is that coaching staffs can not vote for players that are on their team.

Already this off-season, Stanton has taken home the Hank Aaron award and was a finalist for a Gold Glove award. The Hank Aaron award recognized the best offensive player in the entire National League while the Gold Glove is awarded for defense. Being in the final discussion for both of these prestigious awards shows that those around baseball recognize Stanton's all-around contributions to the game.

The last Marlin to win a Silver Slugger award was Dan Uggla in 2010. Prior to that Hanley Ramirez won it in both 2009 and 2009. Miguel Cabrera is on the list from 2005-2006 as is Mike Lowell during the 2003 World Championship season. The first Marlin to ever take home the offensive honor was Gary Sheffield back in 1996.

There is one more award that Stanton is up for and he is one of the finalists for it. The Most Valuable Player award is set to be announced on November 13th. The award is voted on by baseball writers around the nation and is the one that the slugger likely covets the most. Stanton would be the first Marlin to ever win the MVP if he is named the winner.

The All-Star faces stiff competition however with Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates also up for the MVP award. Kershaw is considered the favorite after an outstanding season that helped the Dodgers win the NL West division.

These awards are a sign of Stanton's importance to Miami's lineup. The Marlins appear to be aware of that and are working towards an extension to keep him in Miami for years to come.
