Stanton to Defend Home Run Derby Title at Marlins Park

Giancarlo Stanton will defend his Home Run Derby championship at Marlins Park in July

Miami Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton will defend his title at the Home Run Derby at Marlins Park.

After winning the event in San Diego a year ago, it was considered likely that Stanton would take part in this year's contest. Stanton put any doubt to rest, when he confirmed his place in the HR Derby on Sunday.

Stanton put on a show in 2016 and had Padres fans on their feet early and often. The slugger launched a Home Run Derby record 61 balls over the walls at Petco Park. 20 of those home runs came in the final round, as Stanton came with the title easily.

Not only did Stanton hit the most home runs a year ago, but he hit the longest ones as well. The ten longest home runs during the event, came off the bat of Stanton. Petco Park is known to favor pitchers, but Stanton made it play more like Coors Field in Colorado.

With some homefield advantage this time around, Stanton could put on even more of a show. The stands will be packed with fans who see Stanton's majestic swings all season long. It is a once in a career opportunity, for a player to participate in the HR Derby in his own ballpark. Stanton will likely make the most of this opportunity and could be on his way to being a two-time champion in the contest.

The other participants for the HR Derby have not been announced as of yet, but it is possible Stanton will have a teammate there as well. Marcell Ozuna and Justin Bour have both had powerful first halves and one could end up joining Stanton.

The 2017 Home Run Derby will begin on July 10th at 8:00 p.m.
