Tennis Skirts Are So Hot Right Now

The Sony Ericsson Open serves up a fashion show

Game, set and match — your clothes, that is. The Sony Ericsson Open, in town March 25 through April 5, knows fashion is as much a part of the game as the little yellow ball and racket. And that’s why its annual fashion show is as anticipated as the actual matches themselves.

While in the past the show has featured designers like Diane von Furstenberg and Roberto Cavalli, this year’s economic rut put a slight kibosh on the catwalk. Instead of Blumarine showing at the plaza near the Crandon Park Tennis Center, anticipate looks from Fila on Wednesday, April 1. And then a Mexican-themed show the following day. Times may be tough, but, as they say, the down-graded show must go on.

With the Mexican Tourist Bureau sponsoring the fashion shows, Thursday’s catwalk will transform into an all-things-Mexican extravaganza. Look for swim wear, leisure wear, looks by Guillermina Martinez, and any other accessory you need for a jaunt South of the Border. They’ll also be AeroMexico airline ticket giveaways, Mexican music, and drinks (hello, margaritas). Who knows, a little tequila may just make up for DVF’s absence on the catwalk.

And what about tennis-stars-turned-designers, you ask? Will Venus Williams’ label, EleVen, be making an appearance? Or sister Serena’s Aneres line? While nothing is confirmed just yet, we hear rumors of a show taking place Friday at sunset between sessions. Hopefully it will feature the sisters Williams, because that’s a mix and match we don’t want to miss.
