“The U” Gets a Sequel

Part two will focus on the Canes' rebuilding period between 1992 and 2002

You can never have too much of a good thing, unless we're talking about sleeping pills. Those will kill you. But more of the enthralling Miami football documentary "The U?"

Yes, please, with a little Luther on top.

For hardcore 'Canes fans, at least that wish is being granted this week. Locally-grown filmmaker Billy Corben ("Cocaine Cowboys") has announced that a sequel to his critically acclaimed ESPN doc is in the works, and will pick up where its predecessor left off in 1992. "All About The U" will cover the painful rebuilding period of the 90's, Miami's 2001 national championship, and the infamous fiasco at the Fiesta Bowl in 2002.

We're alternately cheering and sobbing already.

"The U" was an unequivocable smash for ESPN's 30 for 30 film series, in fact the highest rated documentary ever shown on the network. It earned a 1.8 rating with 2.3 million people tuning in for the premiere; the network's other 30 for 30 films have averaged below a 1.0 rating -- proving, as we always say, that everyone wants to be Miami.

Corben says he hasn't yet approached ESPN about airing the sequel, which will be produced through the Miami Beach-based content studio, Rakontur, that he shares with producer Alfred Spellman, but that production has already started. Interviews with former players are  lined up for the first three weeks of April, and then editing will take place throughout the rest of the year.

So what's in store this time around? A Pell Grant scandal, sanctions and scholarship losses, Butch Davis assembling the greatest college football team of all time, Butch Davis lying and leaving, Sebastian's greatest unsportsmanlike penalty (we hope), and triumph and tragedy at the hands of field judge Terry Porter. In other words, pretty much everything we've wanted to watch in a documentary, ever. Giggety!
