The quarterback competition at the University of Miami cleared up some Friday when redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Olsen was suspended for at least one game for a positive drug test.

The news was first reported by NBC 6’s Adam Kuperstein.

UM has not commented on the report.

Olsen has been suspended in the past by the Hurricanes. Last year, Olsen was suspended for the Russell Athletic Bowl for violating team rules, according to the Miami Herald. Olsen’s suspension will keep him out of at least the September 1 game in Kentucky against the Louisville Cardinals.

With Olsen likely out of the picture, the starting quarterback job looks like its transfer Jake Heaps’ to lose. The former Kansas Jayhawk and BYU Cougars quarterback has the experience in big games that no other UM quarterback has this year.

Still, Heaps has gotten progressively worse in each season as a starting quarterback. In 2010, his first year at BYU, he completed 57.2 percent of his passes for 2,316 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Last year in Kansas, he completed 49 percent of his passes for 1,414 yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions and was sacked an average of twice a game.

However, the talent gap between Miami and Kansas should give Heaps plenty of room to greatly improve his numbers in his final year of eligibility. Plus, he has one of the nation’s most dynamic running backs, Duke Johnson, to hand the ball to and ease the pressure off the passing game.
