Overage Anxiety Among High Cellphone Bill Culprits

Find out if you’re really getting the most from your plan

Chances are, you’re wasting money on minutes, texts, and web navigation you don’t even use.

A consumer study carried out by Chicago’s Citizen Utility Board last year shows 66 percent of cell phone users pay for features they don’t use. That’s wasting an average of $359.64 a year.

“It’s a total headache,” said Bianca Toledo, a web designer who pays close to $140 a month for service.

CUB spokesman Jim Chilsen warns: “overage charges are a big problem.”  Not just the charges themselves, but even the fear of them can cost you. They lure you into expensive calling plans you never use, he said.

Toledo pays for 1500 text messages a month, but she never uses all of them. She just doesn’t want to go over. “It is annoying, but for me it’s going to be more annoying if I have an unlimited plan,” she said.

Chilsen says another way to avoid paying extra: use a prepaid plan. The pay-as-you go service means you get what you ask for. Chilsen also suggests checking the features on your plan. You may be paying extra for things like Roadside or Directory Assistance – features you may not need or even know you have.

The cell phone companies themselves also offer ways to examine your plan:
