This Is Why Alexa Was Creepily, Spontaneously Laughing

"Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa on my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and creepy laugh... there's a good chance I get murdered tonight," one Twitter user said

Since February, Amazon Echo users have been reporting that Alexa, its virtual personal assistant, has been breaking into laughter unprompted, NBC News reported.

People have been posting videos of childlike laughter coming from their devices. "Lying in bed about to fall asleep when Alexa on my Amazon Echo Dot lets out a very loud and creepy laugh... there's a good chance I get murdered tonight," @GavinHightower tweeted last month.

On Wednesday, Amazon said it was working on the issue, and later revealed what was going on.

"In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh,'" Nate Michel, a spokesman for Amazon, told NBC News, explaining what the company was doing to fix it.
