Cop Biter Gets a Free Pass

A jury acquits a man accused of biting a cop over airport baggage

Here's a story you can really sink your teeth into.

A Baltimore man accused of biting a Broward Sheriff's deputy on the cheek has been found not guilty Monday of battery on a police officer after an expert told a jury the deputy's Taser shot may have caused the man to take a bite out of law enforcement, reports the Sun-Sentinel.

We're no expert, but we imagine a person would bite if it stopped someone from sending thousands of volts of electricity from passing through their body.

Hasco Logan was a visitor to South Florida in 2008, when he had a run in at the airport with Deputy Tim Duggan over his luggage at Hollywood-Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

The men got into a verbal argument before things escalated and - depending on who you believe - Logan bit Duggan on the cheek.

There is no doubt Duggan was bit and he has the scar and pictures to prove it. But not all bite marks are created equal, according to the ruling of the six-person jury.

Logan, 42, told the jury he was just in town for his aunt's funeral when he was accosted by Duggan. Duggan claims Logan spit in his face and hurled obscenities at the deputy, prompting the initial attempt at arrest.

A kick to the groin later, and Logan had Duggan's cheek in between his canines. Duggan said it took a shock from his stun gun to break the bite, but an expert witness said it was more likely that the Taser shot happened before the bite and may have caused an involuntary reaction.

So Logan the Biter gets a free pass for dining on law enforcement, and BSO deputies learned a valuable training lesson: using your Taser could result in some involuntary pain at your expense.
