Bodies Left for Years At Empty Funeral Home

Coroner suspects four bodies ditched by failed funeral director in 2006

Dead bodies at a funeral home aren't unusual, but a recent discovery is a bit more puzzling than it appears.

Four unidentified bodies were left behind, possibly for years, at a vacant funeral home in Gary, Ind.  That was a big surprise for the Rev. Reginald Burrell and deacons from Northlake Church of Christ, who purchased the building to become an annex to their church.

The Lake County, Ind. Coroner investigated the grisly discovery Tuesday, The Sun-Times reported, and said that the bodies -- one in a bag, one in a corrugated burial box and two in caskets -- may have been there since 2006, when the Indiana State Board of Funeral and Cemetery Services revoked the license of the previous occupant, Serenity Gardens Funeral Home.

Burrell's church bought the property at a tax sale and planned to renovate the building, but first, Gary Police are working with Indiana state agencies to track down the former owner, Darryl Lee Cammack, who is likely to face multiple charges.

It will take several days to identify the bodies, Lake County investigators said.
