Here are the 6 Things to Know for Friday, Sept. 6:
1. Hurricane Dorian howled over North Carolina's Outer Banks on Friday, lashing the low-lying barrier islands as a weakened Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph, the National Hurricane Center reported.
2. In coastal Wilmington, North Carolina, heavy rain fell horizontally, trees bent in the wind and traffic lights swayed as the hurricane drew near. Overnight winds were expected to cause trees and branches to fall on power lines, and debris could block repair crews from accessing damaged lines, according to a utility provider in the area.
3. A cruise ship has left South Florida tonight not full of giddy vacationers, but on a humanitarian mission to the Bahamas. The ship is taking Bahamas’ residents home – free of charge – and it’s also loaded with relief supplies.
4. Royal Caribbean's Empress of the Seas delivered 10,000 meals to Freeport on Thursday, while the Symphony of the Seas delivered another 10,000 meals overnight. Norwegian Cruise Line is also coordinating with local Bahamian authorities to bring aid to the islands. Norwegian Breakaway departed from Miami on Thursday with hurricane relief supplies donated by the cruise line, its employees and other Miami-based organizations.
5. Our local departments are also answering the call for help. A group of firefighters from Miami and Miami-Dade Fire are leaving from Port Everglades to the Bahamas today with supplies and help.
6. Hurricane Dorian has devastated our neighbors. Now it’s our turn to help. NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 are joining the effort to bring humanitarian aid to the Bahamas with a phone bank that will run from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. to collect funds to collect funds to help storm victims.
