NBC 6 and Telemundo 51 in partnership with the NBCUniversal Foundation today announced that three South Florida nonprofit organizations will receive a total of $100,000 as part of the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge.

•    Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship$50,000
Over the last year and half, NFTE South Florida has partnered with the tech/entrepreneurship conference eMerge Americas, providing a platform for top first-year NFTE students to present their business plans to an elite panel of judges. NFTE is strategically located within Miami-Dade College's entrepreneurship hub, the Idea Center, to connect alumni with the South Florida entrepreneurial ecosystem. StartUp for Success stands at the intersection of education, employment, and entrepreneurship. "StartUp for Success" culminates in a pitch competition at eMerge Americas (April 18-19, 2016). Top alumni will make advanced, abstract business concepts while providing clear goals and deliverables to share progress. The tools offered include monthly workshops, regular business coaching, and numerous incubation and prototyping opportunities.

•    Miami City Ballet $25,000
Ballet Bus is a unique program MCB has launched in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, reaching deep into Miami-Dade County to provide young people from traditionally underserved communities with a dance-training program as a gateway into the arts and self-development. The 34-week program provides up to 30 children, ages 7-10, with everything they need to succeed in one of the nation's premier dance training academies: fully subsidized tuition; dance attire; family support and counseling; transportation; and the opportunity to engage with critically acclaimed teachers and artists.

•    EcoTech Visions –  $25,000
EcoTech Visions' programs develop and support local green businesses and green jobs and fcuses on three (3) main initiatives in Miami-Dade County, Florida as it works toward a carbon-neutral Miami and reducing unemployment for its low-income residents: incubation, fellowship and green scouts. EcoTech Visions supports a community of Ecoprenuers committed to growing green jobs in the urban core. Ecoprenuers are shifting beliefs, expanding the market and decreasing carbon emissions pollution through tailored training curriculum, structured mentoring, and legislative advocacy.  Offers a training that converts blue-collar workers into "green-collar."

For the fourth consecutive year, the 21st Century Solutions grant challenge is awarding a total of $1.2 million to 30 nonprofits in 10 markets across the country served by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations, including South Florida. Each of the stations promoted the initiative locally and created a community panel to review and select the final grant recipients. One winning organization and two runners-up are being awarded grants in each city.

The grants support impactful programs that offer bold, new ideas that move communities forward. Winners are being awarded in the following categories: Media Arts and Technology, Civic Engagement, Jobs and Economic Empowerment, Education and Environment.

Back to school is a time of excitement and new beginnings -- new friends, new teachers, new classrooms, and new supplies. Unfortunately, for many children school supplies are a luxury and many go without the necessary materials to succeed in school. Sometimes the only difference between an A+ student and a failing student is having basic supplies to do homework and participate in class.

In partnership with The Shops at Pembroke Gardens and Tiger Direct, NBC 6 is holding a back-to-school supply drive to help kids in our community have the tools they need to do well in the upcoming school year. Your donation of school supplies will have an immediate and profound impact in a child’s life. The drive runs from Monday, July 29 to Sunday, Aug. 11.
