Happy Earth Day

Green movements, concerts, fashion shows and more make this one of the best weeks ever for you and the Earth.

Earth Day is April 22, but the festivities for the big green event get underway in South Florida as early as Saturday, April 18.

ECO-CHIC: When it comes to going green, old is new again. Earth Day gets a fashionable South Beach twist tonight at the Catalina Hotel April 18 at 8 p.m. Models take to the runway for Go Green Fashionista in eco-friendly vintage pieces from Fab Vintage and Belle Pour La Vie jewelry. Remember, recycling isn’t limited to just plastic and paper. Make the most of fabric, too.

THROW THAT JUNK IN YOUR TRUNK: If you have a hunk of technological junk taking up space in your garage, simply bring it over to Crandon Park for its Earthfest festivities April 19 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event welcomes old or used computers and computer parts for recycling.

But there's more to the park than just a drop-off point for your stuff. Be sure to also bring along a blanket and grab a patch of green. Hear the sounds of Spam Allstars, spoken word from Jonathan Rose and see a preview for Disney’s “Earth.” From vegetarian food to nature walks and tours, you and the fam can learn everything you ever wanted to know about being environmentally conscious.

GREEN IN THE GARDEN: What’s greener than a garden? Not much, making it the perfect place to learn how to green up your routine. Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens gets in on the shade of the week April 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Earth Day festivities. Admission is free and the gift shop even tosses in a 10 percent discount on goods. Green is good.

GO, GREEN, GO: Eco-friendly is the theme at Bayfront Park’s Miami Goin’ Green event. From tech-recycling stations and scientist-led experiments for kids and adults, there’s a lot to learn and plenty to peruse with live performances and seminars from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on April 25.

GREEN GROOVE IN THE GROVE: The Barnacle gets eco-savvy with Earth Day Celebration April 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. From music and crafts and games to earth-friendly businesses and organizations, there’s a lot of green to focus on for not a lot of green. The event is free with just $1 for parking. Better yet, ride your bike and make Mother Nature even more proud of your efforts.
