For those who’ve said loud and proud, “there’s no culture in Miami,” they’ll soon learn that they’ve been dead wrong. This Thursday, the international and local artist community are joining forces to create one innovative exhibition.
Convention is taking place at MOCA, Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art, which features performances, workshops, site-specific installations and video projects by people from here, there and everywhere. These artists will look at the effects and roles of social gatherings.
Why look at people gathering together? Why the heck not? It’s fun to get together to learn and enjoy.
With all of this activity going on, you’ll wonder if you’re at an art event or an experimental gathering where the lines between examining others and self blur. Xavier Cha, a New York based artist will have a dance floor that functions as a place for local booty shakers to perform.
From Los Angeles, Fritz Haeg located a Miami couple who let the artist into their living room to host a series of salon discussions. This experience will be transplanted to the exhibition, bringing some actual authentic MIA to this museum setting.
This exhibit has been curated by Ruba Katrib and participating artists include Julieta Aranda, Fia Backström, Xavier Cha, Anne Daems & Kenneth Andrew Mroczek, Jim Drain, Fritz Haeg, Corey McCorkle, Dave McKenzie, Gean Moreno, My Barbarian, Christodoulos Panayiotou, Sean Raspet, Bert Rodriguez, Superflex and Jens Haaning.
