Save Your Skin

Take advice from someone who knows, it’s better to cover up than burn away

Your skin. It’s the big bag of flesh that holds everything together. And how do you thank it? By lying in the sun and sizzling like a slab of bacon. Some payback on your part.

Before you decide to bake at the beach, you may want to take a few tips from Dr. Gary Goldfaden, dermatologist and creator of the Goldfaden skincare line.

“Try avoiding the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when rays are most dangerous. I always tell my patients the use of appropriate sunscreens is essential,” Goldfaden says.

What, exactly, is an appropriate sunscreen? According to Goldfaden, “It should be at least SPF 30 and should also contain broad spectrum agents that protect against both UVA and UVB light waves. Also sunscreens that have physical blockers, such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, are of great value.”

Dermalogica offers up a sensitive skin SPF 30 that fits the bill. Plus, it’s free of chemicals, so it uses natural mineral UV-blockers like the ones the doc mentions above to bounce those rays right off.

Other ways to cover up include, well, actually covering up. “Wearing a hat and other sun protective clothing are of great benefit along with sun-protecting glasses,” Goldfaden explains.

Thanks to lines like Rock and Republic and Eugenia Kim, you can keep it covered and still avoid the “Yup, I’m a tourist” look at the beach. Rock and Republic’s shades are big enough to block out a lot of sun (but certainly not in an old-lady cataracts glasses sort of way), while Eugenia Kim’s hats hide your face and give a little vintage flavor to your beach attire.

But there’s more to healthy skin than just good sunbathing habits. Says Goldfaden, “To fight back every day I recommend a regimen that would include proper cleansing, exfoliation of dead skin cells and application of active anti-oxidant products.”

His Daily Scrub will get you off to a great start. All you have to do is apply and scrub away. So long, wrinkles, hello, healthy glow.

And if you really want a wrinkle reducer, “The avoidance of environmental stresses, natural pollution and, of course, the cessation of smoking would all contribute to lessening wrinkles and premature aging,” Goldfaden adds.
