1/8: We Want the Funk

Afro-Cuban funk downtown, a local music collabo at the White Room and good eats in the Gables

HOW PALO CAN YOU GO? Finally, a reason to go downtown for something other than a Heat game or cheap electronics. The Dwntwn Concert Series starts its 2nd season tonight with Afro-Cuban funk group Palo. Bring your dancing shoes, we're guessing this won't be a sit down affair. 5:30 P.M.

SAY CHEESE: If you've been into the Miami music scene (yes, we have one, really), long enough, then chances are you've caught the String Cheese Incident. Tonight, three members from the group - Michael Travis, Kyle Hollingsworth and Jason Hann -- will team up with Steve Kimock for a one-time-only collabo at the White Room called Holy Kimoto. 10 P.M.

TAKE IT TO THE STREETS: What's better than a street party? A street party without the nosy creepy guy who lives next door and the annoying twins who always smell like squash. That would be Giralda Under the Stars, during which Coral Gables' Giralda Ave. is closed down for live music and al fresco dining at all the restos, such as Bangkok Bangkok and Talavera, along the street. 6 P.M.-midnight.
