It’s hard to find a place on Miami Beach that’s laid back and not pretentious. Purdy Lounge is both of those things and usually also a really fun place to dance. The music is at least foot-tapping good and there’s almost always a place to pop a squat after getting sweaty from shaking your bottom.
This sort of off-the-beaten path bar is home to one of the most interesting Sunday night parties in town. Chocolate Sundays have been a long time hang out for fans of Lil’ Kim and suckers for the Smiths, playing a diverse range of music from hip hop to new wave. Tonight, Egg Foo Young will be spinning in celebration of the release of his record “Eggstra” and Ray Milan and Jessica Who will be spinning in the back room.
As far as what the night is known for, it’s its Happy Meals. For six bucks, you can down a Miller High Life and follow it with a Jager shot. It’s nothing fancy, but it suffices. There’s also the Drunken Spelling Bee where you get rewarded with the anise-tasting Jager for correct word spellings. Practicing ahead of time with flashcards is useless. The words you’ll be quizzed on remind one more of a medical dictionary for slutty drunks than a GRE workbook.
