Groupon Helps Donate to Miami Charity

One day left to donate to the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station

If you always wanted to give to a charity but couldn't afford it, now, you may be able to thanks to Groupon. The Internet deal maker isn't just offering discounts anymore.

Now, it's helping you pay it forward.

Groupon just branched out, developing what they call the "G-team." Besides enjoying deals like half off cookies, the G-team enables Groupon users to make a donation to organizations in their community.

Groups like the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station in Miami, which houses thousands of sick or injured wild animals, benefit from customers' savings. It is being featured this month on Groupon.

Like most non-profit organizations, Pelican Harbor Executive Director Brian Fox said it is hurting for money and donations are needed..

"Last year, we bought more than 40,000 pounds of fish and that was our biggest expenditure," Fox said.

He said the seabird station that helps nearly 3,000 animals a year relies on donations to operate, and thanks to Groupon, donating just got easier.

By using G-team, you can donate $10 to the seabird rehabilitation station, and an anonymous friend of Pelican Harbor will match it - making your total donation $20.

But just like Groupon, a certain amount of people need to donate to make the deal final. With one day until the deal expires, 12 more donors are needed to make 50 and finalize this deal.

"We were already familiar with Groupon, but when we heard of the G-team campaign, we knew it was something we wanted to be a part of," Fox said. "I think it's amazing. It's such a creative idea."

G-team was launched last week, and is already in 35 major cities.

The Pelican Harbor Seabird Station is being featured until midnight Thursday. If you want to donate, or learn more about Groupon and their G-team, log onto www.Groupon.com/G-team.
