Subtropical Storm Melissa Develops Over Central Atlantic

Subtropical storm Melissa developed over the Central Atlantic Monday morning, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

At 11 a.m., the storm was located about 695 miles east-southeast of Bermuda. It had maximum winds of 50 miles per hour and was moving northwest at 9 mph. This motion was expected to continue Monday during the day and into the night.

A slow turn toward the norht was expected Tuesday, and then a turn toward the northeast with an increase in speed on Wednesday.

There were no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

But it is expected to become a tropical storm by Tuesday, and it is expected to remain a large tropical storm for the next couple days.

Bermuda, the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and southeastern Bahamas are already being affected by large swells. Dangerous swells may affect these areas in the coming days, which may cause life threatening surf and rip currents.
