Corrections Officer Found Dead Inside Pembroke Pines Home

A South Florida corrections officer was found dead inside his Pembroke Pines apartment on Friday just a day after his home was reportedly broken into, and so far there have been no arrests.

Police said a supervisor called the family of 40-year-old Daveon Hall after he failed to show up for work Friday at Miami's Pre-Trial Detention Center. Hall's mother, Barbara Drummond, went to his apartment to check on him and found her son lying on the living room floor shot to death.

Drummond told NBC 6 that just a day before his murder, Hall reported his Pembroke Pines apartment, located in the 1000 block of Southwest 122nd Avenue, had been broken into.

Hall's coworkers and leadership within the Organization of Minority Correction Officers, which does not officially represent the corrections department, want an all-out search conducted.

"If his home was burglarized the day before, and the next day the guy is found dead in his apartment, that's obvious concern," said Corporal Corey Barney, president of the Organization of Minority Correction Officers. "Anyone that works in any law enforcement capacity, this is always a possibility unfortunately."

"It could be a coincidence, but sometimes when suspicious things surface, you really have to go after those things," said John Rivera, Police Benevolent Association President.

Pembroke Pines Police have not said whether Hall's work as a corrections officer was in any way connected to his death, but his relatives told NBC 6 that once inside, the burglary suspects likely observed that he was an officer and possibly came back.

"We're concerned. Did those individuals know he was a corrections officer, then come back and target him? Because we have had many cases where corrections officers and police officers have been targeted," Rivera said.

Hall's family told NBC 6 that he went into law enforcement after witnessing his own father's murder when he was very young.

"His intentions were to go into law enforcement so that he could probably solve that mystery," Drummond said.

Hall had been employed as a Miami-Dade Corrections Officer for 15 years.

Corrections Director Marydell Guevera offered her support to Hall's grieving family over the weekend, who said they are now concerned for their own safety.

"The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department mourns the loss of Corporal Daveon Hall. We extend our deepest condolences and full support to his family during this incredibly difficult time. Corporal Hall was a public servant who served Miami-Dade County since 2000," the department said in a statement. "Cpl. Hall and his family are in our thoughts and prayers."

"I just want to see the person that killed my child, my only son, my first child, to come to justice," Drummond said.

Family and friends hope any and all resources are allocated to find the person responsible. Pembroke Pines Police said an active homicide investigation is underway.
