Philippe Cousteau Leads South Florida Research Trip

A grandson of ocean exploration pioneer Jacques Cousteau is visiting Florida to raise awareness about the effects of pollution on marine resources such as corals.

Philippe Cousteau Jr. is bringing his organization, EarthEcho International, to South Florida this week to conduct field research and meet with students and local community leaders.

Starting Tuesday, Cousteau and his team will cultivate staghorn coral with Miami middle school students and talk with U.S. government scientists monitoring coral growth. He'll also be joined by students and educators from Colombia, Ecuador and Peru to reintroduce native plant species in storm water treatment areas.

Cousteau comes from a famous family of filmmakers, advocates and explorers. Earlier this summer, his cousin Fabien Cousteau spent 31 days living in an undersea laboratory in the Florida Keys.
