Alex Maragos anchors the weekday 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. newscasts for NBC
5. Since starting at the station as a general assignment reporter in August
2015, Maragos has held several anchoring and reporting roles with WMAQ,
covering the biggest stories in his hometown and beyond. He came back to
Chicago after spending two years as a morning anchor and reporter at
WLFI-TV in West Lafayette, Indiana.
Since the start of his career, Maragos has won awards for anchoring and
reporting from: the Indiana Chapter of the Society of Professional
Journalists, the Indiana Broadcasters Association, the Illinois Broadcasters
Association, and the Illinois Associated Press Broadcasters Association. He
has also earned three Emmy’s from the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the
National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
Maragos is also co-creator and host of The Takeaway, NBC Chicago’s first
weekly podcast and Youtube show. The Takeaway explores complex news
topics through approachable conversations, diving deep with journalists and
other experts on one big story.
Though he has spent his career covering news, Maragos has a passion for
sports. In summer 2024, he provided 17 straight days of live coverage in
France for the Paris Olympic Games. In 2022, he spent one month in China
covering the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. Since 2016, he has served as
the start and finish line reporter for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Alex graduated from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia,
where he majored in Journalism and Mass Communications and played
baseball for four years. During summers home from college, Alex held
internships at ESPN Radio WMVP-AM 1000, news/talk WLS-AM 890 and
NBC Sports Chicago. He is also a graduate of Loyola Academy in Wilmette.
Alex is married and lives in the north suburbs of Chicago.
