Ryan Nelson

Ryan Nelson is an Emmy® nominated journalist. He joined NBC 6 in June 2021, as a general assignment reporter. Nelson joined NBC 6 unofficially as a sports intern in 2016.

Nelson began his career in 2017 at KRGV-TV, Channel 5 News in McAllen, Texas. He then joined WJAX-TV, Action News Jax in Jacksonville, Florida in 2019. That same year he received an Emmy® Award nomination for his reporting on the Jacksonville Landing mass shooting.

As a young child in Hawthorne, a small town in North Central Florida, Nelson imagined he would one day be a sportscaster. While a student at the University of Florida, Nelson covered both News and Sports as a student anchor and reporter. He graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in telecommunications. Nelson also received the 2016 National Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Award.

Nelson is a member of the South Florida chapter of National Association of Black Journalists, enjoys speaking with aspiring journalists and is passionate about sharing the unique and compelling stories of South Florida’s diverse communities.

He grew up playing the conga drums and drum set for his church’s band for ten years. He also played Lacrosse in high school. As a die-hard college football fan and a proud alumnus of the University of Florida, don’t be surprised if you hear Nelson saying ‘Go Gators’ in everyday conversations.

Nelson lives in Miami with Charli, his golden retriever puppy. He also loves exploring South Florida’s food scene, going to the beach, and trying his hand at photography.
