Trayvon Martin, in Photos, “Looks Like a Good Kid,” NAACP President Ben Jealous Says

“People really want this community to be one community where everybody feels safe. I think it’s hard for people of any color to look at those photos of Trayvon Martin and not see a kid who reminds them of some kid they care about. He looks like a good kid,” NAACP President Ben Jealous said at a gathering his organization held in a Sanford church Wednesday to hear residents talk about Martin’s shooting and their experiences with Sanford Police. The civil rights group’s local leader, Turner Clayton Jr., said the NAACP would turn over the stories of people who accuse the police department of abuse or inadequately investigating cases to the Justice Department, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Police Chief Bill Lee Jr. said last week that his department did “a thorough and fair investigation” into the Feb. 26 death of Martin, 17, of Miami Gardens. Public pressure has grown since then for police to charge shooter George Zimmerman, who told police he acted in self-defense, though according to phone calls he followed Martin before their encounter. “There’s a lot of criticism of the investigation, there’s a lot of questions that they’re out there,” Mayor Jeff Triplett told the crowd at the NAACP event.
