Breast Cancer Screening Goes 3-D

Local center is one of 10 sites in the country testing a tomosythesis system for FDA approval

The Women's Imaging Center at Memorial Regional Hospital is one of 10 sites in the country testing a tomosythesis system for FDA approval.

While it looks like a regular mammogram machine, multiple images are recorded as it arcs over the breast. Dr Mary Hayes is overseeing the clinical trial here. She says the tomosynthesis system “takes 15 mini mammograms.”

Those images are then looped into a mini movie that takes you through breast tissue making it easier to see a cancerous mass hiding deep inside.

This clinical trial compares 3-d images obtained through tomosythnesis to digital flat mammogram images.

Candidates for this study are women 35 and older who have never had breast reduction, implants, or biopsy clips and scheduling a screening mammogram at Memorial Regional.
