1 Dead in Keys After Diving to Retrieve Dropped Anchor

Authorities in the Florida Keys say a man has died after diving to retrieve a dropped anchor.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin says 41-year-old Damian Deandre Smith of North Miami Beach was aboard a private vessel with a group of people Saturday in the waters off Key Largo.

The group planned to anchor in about 50 feet of water near Molasses Reef. Herrin says someone threw the anchor into the water, but it wasn't secured to the boat.

The sheriff's office says Smith wore a mask, snorkel, fins and a heavy weight belt when he dove after the anchor. Witnesses said Smith surfaced once, then dove back underwater and was not seen again.

Key Largo Fire Rescue divers found Smith's body on the ocean floor near the anchor.
