A federal grand jury has indicted 29 people in South Florida on racketeering and other charges in what investigators called a takedown of the Latin Kings gang leadership.

Miami U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer said Tuesday the charges were contained in five separate indictments, with 23 of those charged known members or associates of the Latin Kings.

Prosecutors say the gang commits robberies, burglaries and identity theft operations to make millions of dollars. Assault and murder is used to keep members in line and deal with threats.

Those indicted face a number of charges including racketeering conspiracy, drug trafficking and illegal weapons possession. All of them face lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
