A Bay Harbor Islands man is in jail for allegedly breaking into his neighbor's apartment and stabbing him and his dog.

Roberto Ruano, 50, was in Miami-Dade bond court Wednesday and faces charges of armed burglary, aggravated assault and animal cruelty, according to the Bay Harbor Islands Police Department.

The victim was inside his apartment in the 9000 block of West Bay Harbor Drive when he confronted a man who was breaking the windows of his apartment.

Police say the suspect sliced the victim in his chest, causing a laceration. The victim struggled with the suspect, who tried to gain entry into the apartment and broke more windows in the process. The suspect also stabbed the victim's dog, police said.

Ruano, who is from Guatemala, is on immigration hold and will be deported if he is found guilty of the charges, authorities said. Attorney information wasn't available.
