42 Migrants Arrested After Coming Ashore in South Florida

NBC Universal, Inc. An attorney tells NBC 6 that the many Haitian nationals that were recovered by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol may be able to stay in the U.S. if the president grants them temporary protective status. NBC 6’s Julie Leonardi reports.

A group of Haitian migrants was taken into federal custody after coming ashore Tuesday afternoon in South Florida, federal authorities said.

At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, 42 Haitian nationals were taken into Border Patrol custody. The vessel involved will be seized, Border Patrol agents said in a tweet.

Footage from Chopper 6 shows officers pulling a group of people from a vessel onto a Miami-Dade Police boat.

Another officer told NBC 6 at the scene that a search was underway for two to three people who made it to the beach.

Haiti’s southwestern peninsula was hit earlier this month by a 7.2-magnitude earthquake, killing at least 2,200 people, injuring more than 12,000 others and destroying nearly 53,000 houses.
