A child visiting the Florida Keys was airlifted to a Miami hospital after he was found face down after a snorkeling incident Monday.

The 8-year-old from South Carolina was found in the water off Marathon, near Sombrero Beach, around 3 p.m. after a Good Samaritan saw the child and brought him to a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy nearby.

The man who found the child said he had been coughing up blood since being found, while the victim’s father said they had been kayaking earlier in the day when the child began to float away after snorkeling in a full face mask.

Rescue crews airlifted the child to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Southwest Miami-Dade, where he is expected to be released from on Tuesday.
