Daycare Center Where Toddler Died Closed

Katie's Kids in Delray voluntarily closed day after tragedy

The Delray Beach daycare center where a young child was found dead inside a van has temporarily closed.

Katie's Kids Learning Center at 111 Southwest 10th Ave. opened briefly Friday morning before it was voluntarily closed for the day.

On Thursday, the center was the scene of a horrific accident when a 2 1/2-year-old girl's lifeless body was found in the back of a transport van after she'd apparently been left in the back all day.

The girl, identified as Haile Brockington, was found at 4 p.m., after nearly six hours in the back of the van.

"It appears this child either fell asleep or was overlooked," said Jeff Messer, with the Delray Beach Police Department. "It's a small child, 2 1/2 year old female, would have been three in November, and was found this afternoon by an employee of the school who was getting ready to go drive the van."

The temperature in Delray Thursday was about 90 degrees.

Police are still investigating how the girl was left in the car for so long.

Administrators of the daycare, which has been open since 2009, didn't comment.
