Doctors predict a start to the school year complete with sniffles as a flu-like illness spreads throughout Southwest Florida.
The Centers for Disease Control say it is known as Rhinovirus, or another name for the common cold, according to NBC affiliate WBBH-TV. Both adults and children are becoming sick - and with school just around the corner, the situation looks to only worsen.
“It's definitely past the point where I'd expect colds to be going around,” Justin Cagle, a Fort Myers resident who was stricken by the virus, told the station.
Local pediatrician Dr. Pierre Loredo told the station that with school in session soon, he anticipates treating what they call the “back to school plague” for the next two months.
Students are advised to wash their hands at school - and if they have a fever to stay home, rest, and drink plenty of fluids.
