A mother and son were hospitalized after being attacked by a dog near Fort Lauderdale Saturday afternoon.

A mother and son were hospitalized after being attacked by a dog near Fort Lauderdale Saturday afternoon.

The 9-year-old boy was riding a bicycle in the 1800 block of SW 43rd Avenue in unincorporated Broward County around 3 p.m. That's when neighbors said the dog came running and attacked.

Family members and neighbors tried to stop the dog from biting the boy, using a broom and even a skateboard to keep the dog at bay.

Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said the mother and boy were transported to Broward Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. According to Jachles, the mother sustained more serious injuries than the child.

The dog was confiscated by Animal Control. It is unclear if the dog's owner will face charges.
