Dolphin Player's Mom Drafted By Rick Scott

Rick Scott adds Jacksonville rep. and Dolphin mom to his ticket

Republican Rick Scott just picked up 53 votes in his bid for governor after selecting state Rep. Jennifer Carroll as his choice for Lieutenant Governor.

Carroll is the mother of Miami Dolphins rookie cornerback and kick returner, Nolan Carroll II.

"She's a history-maker and a barrier-breaker," Scott said.

Scott surprised many with his shocking win over GOP favorite Bill McCollum in the August primary and some might view his pick of Carroll as another shocker. But it makes more sense - politically and football-wise, than one would think.

Carroll, who represents Jacksonville, is touted as the first Republican African-American woman to serve in the state Legislature and will likely pull votes from women and minorities in what will be a close race with Democrat Alex Sink, who is looking to become the first woman to be governor of Florida.

An immigrant from Trinidad, Carroll served 20 years in the U.S. Navy, working as a jet mechanic before retiring as a lieutenant commander. Elected to the state House in 2003, she's served as deputy majority leader and majority whip. She's also a former executive director of the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. She moved to Florida in 1986 and currently runs a public relations
consulting business.

From a football standpoint, the Jacksonville Jaguars are a pretty crappy team and the Dolphins are going places. And for Dolfans, it's always good to know your players have friends (or family) in high places. You never know when you might need funding for a new stadium.

That can't be overlooked in an election year (or maybe it can and we just love talking about the Dolphins).

Still, it always helps to root for a winner.
