Driver flees on foot after striking and killing man on scooter in NW Miami-Dade

The Miami-Dade Police Department is searching for a driver who allegedly struck and killed a scooter rider early Tuesday morning and fled the scene.

According to MDPD, the hit-and-run crash happened around 5 a.m. as the driver of a black BMW was heading northbound on Northwest 22nd Avenue near Northwest 54th Street in Brownsville.

The BMW driver ran a red light and struck the scooter then fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction with a second person who was in the car.

The driver of the scooter was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity hasn't been released.

Video from the scene captured by NBC6 shows the mangled BMW with the scooter still attached to the front from the impact.

The victim's body was also seen covered by a yellow tarp on the ground as debris filled the streets.

The incident remains under investigation.
