Miami-Dade Police are investigating after an elderly couple was assaulted and robbed as they exited their vehicle in the garage of their home.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. on May 9 in the 7300 block of Northwest 5th Street in Miami.

According to investigators, the elderly couple had returned home from conducting a cash transaction at a bank.

As they were exiting their vehicle, they were confronted by two unknown Hispanic males. Police said one man pushed the elderly female and took her purse. The suspects ran back to a white minivan that was awaiting nearby.

"I was so shocked. I was so frightened, all I was doing was standing and shaking, didn't know what to do," explained 90-year-old Gwendolyn Peiffer, victim.

During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the victims' vehicle had a flat tire. One of the rear tires appeared to have been slashed with a sharp object.

Gwendolyn said she knew something was up with her car the minute she drove out of the bank, but she kept going because she was close to home. After pulling into the garage, she and her husband were ambushed.

The subjects fled with approximately $11,500. The couple said they took out the money to pay bills and to lend a friend some cash.

"I had to get a key for my car and Toyota charged me $288.13, that's a lot of money. I had to go get my license," Gwendolyn explained.

The couple said they hope the thieves are caught. However, more importantly, they believe they need to check in with their conscience.

"I don't wish any bad luck for them, but I do think if they think of their own people, if that had happened to them, what would they have done," Gwendolyn said.

Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
