A family is desperate for answers after a 44-year-old man was shot and killed on the streets of Little Haiti Wednesday.

Jose Ceruto's family members choked up as they gave a plea Friday seeking information in his murder.

"We love him and we miss him," sister Menlys Grullon said. "He did not deserve to die the way he did."

Ceruto was discovered shot to death on a sidewalk early Wednesday. Police said the homicide happened around 3 a.m. near Northwest 5th Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets.

His family said Ceruto frequented the area but they don't know why someone would kill him in such a brutal way.

"All we ask is that we get answers, that's all we want," Grullon said. "The person that did this, you have affected a mother, you have two mothers. You have affected sisters, a daughter. He had a daughter that was 11 years old."

Detectives believe Ceruto may have been a victim of a robbery that went wrong. He leaves behind a huge family who loved him dearly.

"He would see someone on the street that needed help and if he didn't have anything in his wallet except a dollar, he would hand it to that person," Grullon said.

Ceruto's family said the 44-year-old was a charitable guy who was always helping the less fortunate.

"He knew how to turn a room around and light up a room," sister Susana Hernandez said.

The family is hoping that someone can help them track down whoever killed him.

"Out of the goodness of your heart, please come forward so that we can put closure to this nightmare that we have," Grullon said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
