Pet owners found balls of meat scattered around a dog park in Volusia County. Inside the meat were fish hooks.
A police officer found fish hooks hidden within balls of meat placed at a dog park in Florida's Volusia County when responding to a report of contaminated meat.
The incident occurred Tuesday at the dog park in the Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park located in Ormond-By-The-Sea.
At least six contaminated meatballs were found at the park for small dogs. None were found at the park for large dogs.
"The meat was still cold and sweating like it had been frozen and was thawing in the sun for awhile," the Volusia County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook. "Several were very mushy. The meat appeared have the consistency and smell of liverwurst."
At least one dog ate a dangerous meatball and was transported to the hospital. The Tomoka Pines Veterinary Hospital said X-rays revealed the dog did not ingest any hooks.
In 2015, the officer who responded to Tuesday's incident found meat stuffed with pills inside the same small dog park.
