Five Rescued After Boat Capsizes Near Fisher Island

Five men were rescued near Fisher Island after their boat overturned Friday morning. NBC 6’s Laura Rodriguez reports.

Five men were rescued near Fisher Island after their boat overturned Friday morning.

Chopper 6 was above the scene just before 10 a.m. as Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pulled them from the water.

"The sea was a little rough, but the rescue was effective and quick," said Lt. Lionel Reyes.

Officials said the experienced boaters went out fishing for bait, when suddenly their 23-foot vessel started taking on water. The cuplrit: a faulty bilge pump. WIth the pump inoperable, excess water could not drain out.

The men told authorities a wave then caused the vessel to flip over.

Rescuers brought the group to the Watson Island Marina. None of the men were injured in the incident.
