Florida Adds Over 6,800 New Coronavirus Cases, 22 More Virus-Related Deaths Sunday

The rate of coronavirus cases in Florida and the U.S. are spiking. NBC 6’s Laura Rodriguez reports

The United States reached another grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic, surpassing 10 million cases on Sunday. Florida added more than 6,800 new COVID-19 cases the same day, as the state confirmed 22 additional virus-related deaths.

The 6,820 new COVID-19 cases brought Florida's total to 843,897, according to the daily report from the state's department of health.

With 21 more virus-related deaths among Florida residents, the total rose to 17,121 Saturday. Another 212 non-resident deaths have been confirmed in the state to-date, one more than in Saturday's report. Most of the newly confirmed deaths occurred days or weeks earlier.

The positivity rate for new cases in the state was 6.23% in Sunday's report, lower than Saturday's reported rate of 8.27%.

The positivity rate for all cases in Sunday's report was 7.67%, a decrease from Saturday's rate of 9.82%.

In South Florida, Miami-Dade had 194,356 cases Sunday, an increase of about 1,710 since Saturday, along with 3,683 COVID-related deaths, 1 more than Saturday's report.

In Broward County, there were 90,997 COVID-19 cases reported, a daily increase of about 825, along with 1,548 virus-related deaths.

Palm Beach County had 55,449 cases and 1,609 virus-related deaths Sunday, while Monroe County had 2,568 cases and 25 deaths.

The country as a whole reported 10,001,702 cases on Sunday with 239,093 reported deaths from the virus.
