Florida surpassed 100,000 coronavirus cases Monday as the state reported nearly 3,000 new cases and a dozen new deaths.

With 2,929 new COVID-19 cases, the state's total rose to 100,217, according to figures released by the Florida Department of Health.

It's the first day in nearly a week that new reported cases were under 3,000. Just under 3,500 new cases had been reported Sunday, and Florida set a daily record Saturday with 4,049 new cases.

Another 12 new deaths related to the virus were confirmed Monday, bringing the state's total to 3,173.

Statewide, more than 1,618,500 people have been tested for COVID-19, with the percent positive around 6%. More than 13,100 hospitalizations for COVID-19 have been reported in Florida to-date.

Miami-Dade's case total rose to 26,239, and the county's virus-related deaths rose to 884 Monday.

In Broward County, there were 11,327 COVID-19 cases reported, along with 373 virus-related deaths.

Palm Beach County had 10,943 cases and 468 deaths. Monroe County had 165 cases and 4 reported deaths.

On Saturday, Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered the Health Department to reissue advisories urging Floridians to consider wearing masks to help keep the virus from spreading and to refrain from attending gatherings of more than 50 people.

Despite the rise in new infections, the governor has not signaled any possibility of retreat from reopening the state after three months of closures that have damaged the economy, kept hundreds of thousands of people from their jobs and disrupted the day-to-day lives of Floridians.

Some businesses have delayed plans to reopen, while others have reclosed because of jitters over the rising number of new cases or because of employees becoming infected by COVID-19.

At a press conference Saturday afternoon, Gov. Ron DeSantis tried to quell concerns over continued spikes in Florida's coronavirus case count. NBC 6's Derrick Lewis reports.

During a Saturday news conference, DeSantis attempted to quell concerns about the spikes in new cases. Despite the high number of new infections, the governor noted that the number of hospitalizations hasn't been increasing at the same rate.

He said the wider availability of testing has contributed to the numbers. Much of the new infections involved younger people, many of them not exhibiting symptoms of the disease.

He urged them to take precautions, but he has resisted calls for making masks mandatory in places like supermarkets and other public places.
