Missing Fort Lauderdale Lifeguard Found

Woman set out from Fort Lauderdale beach at 9:20 a.m. and failed to show up for a shift hours later, setting off a multi-agency search

A missing Fort Lauderdale lifeguard who was the subject of an intense search Sunday morning is alive and well.

The unnamed female lifeguard paddled out for training Sunday morning around 9:20 a.m. and then failed to show up for her shift, said Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesperson Matt Little.

"The surf if really rough out there, and they train in those conditions so they can rescue people," he said.

Though Broward Sherrif's Office sent out a helicopter, searchers could not spot the woman between the waves.

Her husband was on scene as the U.S. Coast Guard wascalled to assist, according to law enforcement sources, but Little said the woman was able to make it back to shore on her own just before noon.

She was transported to Broward General as a precaution.
