Gator Bites Man's Foot While Fishing in the Everglades

A South Florida man was attacked by an alligator while fishing in the Everglades last Monday, in an incident that was caught entirely on camera.

Nino Alvarez says he was bass fishing at night when a bite on his boot caught him off guard and tried to drag him into the water. That bite turned out to be an alligator.

With previous experience in dealing with gators – and pythons – he knew just what to do.

"I didn’t want to hurt the little buddy, but it was either me or the alligator,"Alvarez said in a video posted on Facebook recapping the attack.

He pulled a knife from his boot and stabbed the gator in the head.

"When you fish down here, always flash your light first," Alvarez advised.

"A flashlight, a knife, and if possible, a firearm" will help prevent future gator attacks from happening, according to Alvarez.

Alvarez walked away from the attack with just a few cuts and scrapes.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is currently investigating the attack.
