A five-day event to help homeowners stay in their homes kicked off Thursday in Miami Beach.
The Save the Dream Tour is presented by the National Assistance Corporation of America, a traveling organization that says it will keep fighting until lenders cooperate.
"The key part is to meet face to face with the lender so you can tell them your personal circumstances to get your decision done that day," said Bruce Marks of the NACA.
Debbie and Scott Belko were at Thursday's event looking for help. He is experiencing wage losses; she is battling health problems.
"Losing my home. Lost my business because of it,” Debbie Belko said.
"We went originally to ask for help on our own and that was just the runaround,” Scott Belko said.
They are among the hundreds and hundreds showing up Thursday in similar shoes getting help on the spot.
"We're getting a lot more principal reductions than we were getting before so people not only can get their initial rate down to 2% fixed but get their outstanding principal reduced by tens of thousands and sometimes over $100,000," Marks said.
Bank of America and now Chase are a couple of the many lenders helping families lower their payments. It's working. Henry and Stella Florez of Kendall walked away with good news.
"We're going to save $600 bucks and 2%. That's not bad. No, I’m very happy," the couple said preparing to leave the event.
The program leaves South Florida on Monday. It’s being held at the Miami Beach Convention Center and is free to the public.
