POMPANO BEACH, FL – JUNE 17: Broward Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Ozzy Tianga (L), along with other Deputies, deal with a man who was suspected of being under the influence of the drug Flakka on June 17, 2015 in Pompano Beach, Florida. The Sheriff’s Office is on the front lines to keep people from the drug, categorized as a bath salts, which has become an epidemic among users because the cheap synthetic drug made in overseas pharmaceutical plants can be swallowed in capsule form, snorted, injected, or smoked via an e-cigarette. Some of the effects of the drug include body overheating, a heightened sense of euphoria and greater propensity for uncontrollable violence. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

An inmate who escaped a Broward health center was taken into custody Wednesday after leading officers on a cross-county pursuit in a stolen car.

Deputies said 46-year-old Azmi Mahmoud was being transferred from the main jail to the Henderson Behavioral Health facility due to a court order when they were notified that he left undetected around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Davie Police Department found Mahmoud in a BMW that was stolen that morning during a carjacking in Hollywood. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Mahmoud fled, leading a pursuit that eventually crossed into Miami-Dade County.

Mahmoud attempted to drive in the wrong direction of a roadway when BSO deputies initiated a PIT maneuver to stop his vehicle.

The pursuit ended near Northwest 42nd Avenue and Gratigny Parkway, where Mahmoud was taken into custody and is expected to be booked at BSO's main jail for escape and fleeing and eluding law enforcement officers. Additional charges are expected.
