Authorities are investigating a crash in North Lauderdale that left a teen scooter rider dead Thursday.

The crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. near the 7900 block of West McNab Road and involved the 13-year-old standup electric scooter rider and another vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz sedan.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials said the teen was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of West McNab Road and the Mercedes driver didn't realize it until the scooter was directly in front of her.

The Mercedes tried to avoid the crash but the teen drove into the passenger side of the Mercedes, officials said.

When deputies arrived, they found the injured juvenile, who was rushed to a local hospital.

He was later pronounced dead. He was identified as 13-year-old Raequon Laster.

Drivers were heard in 911 calls trying to help him, telling the 911 operator his ankle was broken and he was trying to move.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, and BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit responded to investigate.

Officials said they don't believe excessive speed or impairment were factors in the crash.

No other information was immediately known.
