Suicide bombers from the militant al Shabaab group detonated two car bombs, killing more than 20 people on Sunday, NBC News reports. The group, which has carried out deadly attacks in the Horn of Africa country as it tries to topple the Western-backed government, claimed responsibility for the attacks. Residents in the north central Somalian town of Galkayo said they heard two loud blasts followed by heavy gunfire. The bombs went off at a local government headquarters in the country’s semi-autonomous Puntland region, officials and witnesses said. Al Shabaab has become more active in Puntland since moving more forces there after being pushed out of strongholds farther south by an African Union force and the Somali National Army, experts and officials say.
Stangs of South Florida, a local club of primarily Ford Mustang enthusiasts, set out from Davie to Islamorada this weekend, as a tribute to 9/11 victims and to all those who have died serving the United States.
The cars started on Saturday and were escorted by the Broward Sheriff's Office motorcycles and patrol cars until they left the county.
More than 200 cars participated, and all proceeds will benefit the law enforcement charities: Sheriff's Foundation of Broward County and Florida Firefighters Charities.
"This event was started in honor of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy and was made to not only honor their existence, but raise money for their families,” said organizer Benton Launerts. “Since the original event was spawned seven years ago, 9/11 has since been proclaimed by the U.S. Government as Patriot Day and is now a day to honor those who have died serving our country as well as the victims of 9/11.”
This is the eighth year of the tribute.
